A temporary injunction requested by a group of unions, including 141, has been granted, delaying implementation of Right to Work in West Virginia. The injunction was granted by the Kanawha County Circuit Court, and will surely be appealed and fought. Great news, but just the beginning. ~Tom Conner

Meeting was mostly a meet and greet:
I had a dinner meeting with Fluor Constructors and other principals of the cracker project tonight, along with other craft Business Managers and agents with jurisdiction in Belmont County. Fluor is still competing against Bechtel for the contract to build the plant. Some of their statements give a clue to the scope and breadth of this massive project. They need to buy property to use as parking lots, ideally within ten minutes of the site, big enough to hold six thousand cars. They also seek a lay-down yard, to hold material and equipment not yet installed. This would need to be at least thirty, but ideally fifty acres in size. This would not have to be as close if it is on the river, as they would employ a barge and tow boat.
A similar project in Indiana peaked out at 14,000 construction workers, and that number does not include engineers, safety crews, quality control, etc. For perspective, this equates to roughly 2520 electricians (18%), which is typical. I currently have 75 local brothers and sisters seeking employment, and about 300 out of town folks, leaving a gap of 2145.
Although site preparation would begin much sooner, full blown construction would begin in 2019. Here is the part that most do not realize. Spin off job numbers will be enormous. Concrete batch plants, truck terminals, end product user manufacturing facilities, delivery pipeline, retail businesses, etc, would all need to be built and will create jobs. The flow of people back to our valley will be tremendous.
P.S. Fluor believes the project will get the green light. ~Tom Conner

"We all know about the beating we took at the WV State Legislature this year. We also lost round 2, at the Supreme Court level. Changing the makeup of this court is as important as turning the House and Senate around. Supreme Court justices are elected in a non-partisan election on May 10, there is no November election. WV residents, please remember to vote, and please consider voting for Darrell McGraw for WV Supreme Court. He is a true friend of labor." ~Tom Conner, Business Manager
